Chevrolet Equinox is the brand's representative for the small crossover SUV class. It has done well over the last few years. In fact, it's Chevy's second top selling vehicle in North America following the ubiquitous Silverado pickup.

For 2016, it gets a light refresh in its look but keeps the current engine lineup. The exterior look is brightened with a revised front-end styling and projector-beam headlights, LED daytime running lights and an updated rear fascia with new taillights. Inside, the new features warm the cabin and improve safety.

Chevrolet Equinox has gained popularity as a family vehicle. The generous cabin space, good maneuverability, smooth ride and excellent fuel efficiency make it a great choice as a family mover.


Chevrolet Equinox carries forward the handsome styling that it has had since the 2010 release. Following suit with other Chevy vehicles, it now features the new dual-port grille with a bold mesh pattern and a horizontal split bar. The headlamps have also been squared off. With the more sculpted lower front fascia and new reflector-style headlamps, it sharpens and brightens the overall look.

The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox has four trim levels: L, LS, LT and LTZ. The entry level L has 17-inch alloy wheels and automatic headlights as standard equipment. LS has similar features as L with a few additions and an available towing package.

The LT and LTZ get daytime running lamps with LED accents. LT also gets 17-inch wheels, heated mirros and roof rack side rails. LTZ also gets 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps and chrome trim on the rear. The V6 models have chrome exhaust pipes. The LT's Convenience package adds a power liftgate and updates the wheels to 18-inch chrome clad ones. Sunroof is an option for both the LT and LTZ.

Power and Performance:

The standard engine for the 2016 Chevrolet Equinoxis a 2.4-liter inline-4 which outputs 182 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque.. The LT and LTZ models can be upgraded to a very capable 3.6-liter V6 engine with 301 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard but there is an option to go all-wheel drive.

This SUV offers decent fuel economy with 10.5L/100 Kmsin the city and 7.3L/100 Kms on highways for the inline-4 engine with FWD and 11.5L/100 Kms city/8.2L/100 Kms hwy on the AWD. For the V6 engine is only available as an option on the AWD model and achieves fuel ratings of 14.9L/100 Kms for the city and 10.1L/100 Kms on the hwy.

Interiors and Special Features:

For 2016, Equinox also brightened its interiors with new chrome shift buttons and improved instrument panel graphics. The center stack has been redesigned with a new storage shelf added.

A new interior colour is available and there has been an upgrade in materials used for the L and LS models. All models have the standard touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth phone pairing. LT and LTZ comes with MyLink head unit which adds smartphone-streaming, voice activation, Pandora and Stitcher integration.

Other standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors and tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Some trim levels have options for adding steering-wheel audio/phone controls, remote start and other convenience items.

Last year, Chevrolet Equinox started using an OnStar system with 4G LTE data connection which can be configured to create an in-car wifi network. Chevy includes three-month/3GB trial with each new vehicle.

Chevrolet Equinox offers roomy interiors and comfortable seating. The 60/40 split backseat has a slide-and-recline functions which add further versatility. The rear cargo is only 31.5 cubic feet but with the rear seats folded down, it expands to 63.7 cubic feet (1,804 liters).

Safety features:

Chevrolet Equinox offers a hefty lineup of safety features as standard for all models including four-wheel disc brakes, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, head-curtain side airbags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted bags. For 2016, rearview camera is now standard on all models. Other optional safety features include lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems, blind-spot monitors and rear-cross traffic alert systems that are available depending on the trim line.

IIHS ranked Chevrolet Equinox with "Good" ratings on all crash tests, including the small overlap frontal crash test. This earned it a Top Safety Pick designation. In government crash tests, Equinox received an overall score of four stars with four stars for frontal crash and rollover crash protection and five stars for side protection.
