Honda CR-V

Honda CR-V continues to be a practical choice for a family vehicle owing to its top-notch safety standards and family-friendly features.

Honda CR-V continues to be a tough contender in the world of compact SUVs. It has been awarded 2nd place in Canadian Black Book Best Retained Value Awards for the third straight year.

For 2016, not much has changed from the previous year's model. Only an addition trim level has been introduced. The SE (Special Edition) trim features 17-inch alloy wheels, a two-tone finish, rear privacy glass and security system.

Generally, as a vehicle class, compact SUVs offer good functionality at an affordable price point. The engines are typically small with modest power but has exceptional fuel-efficiency ratings. They often give you a comfortable ride sans a sporty feel or spirited experience. Honda CR-V fits the bill and is among the top contenders in this class.

Profile

The 2016 Honda CR-V carries over the look of its predecessor. This five-passenger crossover is available in three trim levels: LX, SE, EX, EX-L and Touring. The base model comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, expanded view driver's mirror and keyless entry. An upgrade to the SE comes with 17-inch alloy wheels and security system.

EX adds automatic headlights with LED daytime running lights, sunroof, foglights, a retractable cargo cover to the exterior. EX,L comes with roof rails and heated side mirrors. The Touring edition includes 18-inch wheels, projector beam headlights and power liftgate.

The profile is simple, bordering on boxy with a tapered rear. The efficient design gives passengers generous space and cargo room while contributing to maximum fuel efficiency.

Power and Performance:

As in previous years, Honda CR-V keeps the powertrain simple and straightforward with only one engine type available, regardless of trim level. The 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine outputs 185 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. This is coupled with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and is available in both front-wheel drive (LX only) and all-wheel drive (all models). Steering is precise and handling is stable.

Acceleration is sprightly going from zero to 96.5 in 8.8 seconds. Fuel economy rating is 8.8L/100 Kms in the city and 6.9L/100 Kms on the highway with the FWD and 9.5L/100 Kms for city driving and 7.5L/100 Kms on highways for the AWD.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior of the 2016 Honda CR-V is designed to provide ample space for passengers. The cargo space is just as generous with 1054L, expanding to an impressive 2007L with the seats folded down. By the way, it's worth mentioning that it has the best seat-folding mechanism in its class -- the spring-loaded seatbacks are auto-folding with one pull of the lever.

The base model is loaded with high-tech features such as full power accessories, a multi-angle rearview camera, cruise controls, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, USB interface, exterior temperature indicator, 160-watt four-speaker sound system, steering-wheel mounted controls, a text-message reader with a digitized voice and Pandora compatibility.

Safety features:

Safety equipment found in the 2016 Honda CR-Vincludes driver and front passenger airbags, side-curtain airbags with rollover sensor, front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System and electronic stability control. In the LX model, Honda LaneWatch is added to the safety features. This camera-mounted in the right door mirror shows a video of the right-hand blind-spot in the center display when the driver signals for a right turn or lane change. The Touring trim level comes with active-safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warnings and steering correction.

For several years now, Honda CR-V has been a strong performer in crash tests. IIHS gave it "Good" scores across the board and a Top Safety Pick+ award while NHTSA rated Honda CR-V with five stars and an "Excellent" score across its test categories.

Overall, the 2016 Honda CR-V is a practical choice as a family hauler. It offers an engine with adequate power for everyday use, a comfortable drive, impressive fuel-efficiency and outstanding safety record.
