Produced between 2003 and 2005, with a revival model announced for 2019, the Lincoln Aviator is an SUV that shared its chassis with the Ford Explorer. But, the Aviator had plenty of its own unique character, which was highlighted in its V8 power, third-row seating and a fully independent suspension. It was intended to rival the most exclusive Japanese and European luxury brands, which is why it offered tons of amenities and an upscale interior. Here’s what you need to know about it.
Luxury SUV Power
The Aviator came equipped with a 4.6-litre V8 that generated a healthy 302 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. Coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission, the SUV was able to transfer power to either all four wheels or just the rear wheels, depending on the trim level in question. One of the best things about the Aviator is the fact that it had plenty of towing capability over its less rugged competition, which was the result of the combined muscle-bound V8 and a body-on-frame design. The ride was quite comfortable in urban settings and offered plenty of handling agility even on more challenging roads.
Aimed at the Rivals
The most obvious feature inside the Aviator was the waterfall centre stack design, complemented by a contrasting leather and wood trim. The instrument panel was home to large and classy-looking analog dials with white numbering and red needles. Depending on whether you had a second-row split bench seat or individual captain’s chairs with a centre console, the Aviator could comfortably seat six or seven. There was ample legroom to be found throughout the SUV and especially in the third row, with the overall interior comprising an attractive-looking and well-designed package.
Tons of Standard Features
Initially, you could opt for one of two trim levels, with even the base version offering fairly generous equipment and features as standard. Examples included rear park assist, adjustable pedals, leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control. The top-of-the-line models also incorporated heated and cooled seats, as well as HID headlamps as standard, with optional packages offering everything from a trailer hitch and DVD-based navigation system to a rear-seat entertainment system, moonroof and stability control.
