Lincoln LS

Designed to take on luxury midsize sedans hailing from Europe, the Lincoln LS was praised as a North American-built car that had the space of a 5 Series at the price of a 3 Series BMW. Produced between 2000 and 2006, the Lincoln LS was a rear-wheel-drive car that aimed to take on the premium luxury midsize sedans hailing from a number of European top brands. It had both the technology and the looks to achieve such a tall order, with many praising it as a car that boasted the roominess of the BMW 5 Series, but with a price tag that resembled that of the smaller 3 Series. Entertaining Beyond Measure

Oddly enough, back roads seemed to be the favourite playground for LS owners, thanks to the four-wheeler offering a choice between a V6 and V8 engines. It also boasted a well-tuned suspension and rear-wheel-drive, all of which were just cherries on top. Unfortunately, the LS was discontinued after the 2006 model year as a result of the sales slowing down. It was difficult for it to keep up with the plethora of more luxurious, competent and newer sedans that kept winning over the market.

Crunching the Numbers

Differentiated by the engine under the hood, the LS was originally available in two separate trim levels. The less expensive LS V6 offered 210 horsepower from its 3.0-litre engine and a reasonable fuel economy as a result. Buyers going for this version of the car could also opt for either a five-speed automatic or five-speed manual. On the other hand, the LS V8 incorporated a 3.9-litre engine that generated 252 horsepower. This version of the car came standard with a five-speed automatic. The V8 was the preferred option as it offered a smooth acceleration, as well as a compliant and comfortable ride.

A Thoroughbred Touring Sedan

With sufficient storage space in the cabin, fairly high quality interior materials and ample roominess to accommodate four adults very comfortably, the LS was at its best when used as a touring sedan. Later upgrades to the engine end interior really brought out the best this interesting four-wheeler had to offer. Examples include a bump in horsepower to 280 for the V8 engines, and to 222 horsepower for the V6 ones in 2003. The five-speed manual was no longer available and the suspension and steering were returned. Similarly, upgrades were made to both the storage and materials. A THX sound system, side curtain airbags and navigation system were also added at that time. Go for the Newer Models for the Best Value Though the Lincoln LS is a fine car by anyone’s standards, we would still recommend going for the 2003 or newer versions for maximum value for your money. This is due to the fact that in 2004 satellite radio was added to the offer as a dealer-installed option, in addition to the fact that the company continued to improve the automatic transmission in order to achieve better and smoother shift quality. Overall, the Lincoln LS is a sedan that is still able to give its European counterparts a run for their money, so do not overlook this great car if looking to invest in a used midsize luxury sedan.
