December 07 2019
Toyota is an internationally recognized name which has provided the car market with some of the most amazing and good-looking creations. From basic hatchbacks to the pick-up trucks – the company have always given car lovers something exclusive. The Toyota FJ Cruiser is an excellent addition to the line-up, offering drivers many convenient features and promising more off-road fun. A testament to this is the fact that the FJ Cruiser is the recipient of the much-coveted Canadian Black Book Award for Best Retained Value over the course of a four-year period, which means it holds more for you than may meet the eye. Keep reading to learn what made this reliable vehicle worthy of such a desired award.
First arriving on Canadian shores in 2006, the FJ Cruiser immediately stood out for its odd external looks: a unique body propped high with the standard roof rails, spare tire on the boot hatch and big headlights was meant to say that this was an SUV that meant business in the traditional, true off-road sense of the word. And it did – hordes of loyal Canadian Toyota 4x4 fans immediately took to the FJ, as they were certain the Japanese automotive innovator had once again done a superb job of manufacturing yet another excellent off-road vehicle. They were right – Toyota has been making remarkable off-roaders for more than 50 years, one of which happens to be the FJ Cruiser legendary predecessor – the iconic FJ40 Land Cruiser.
Power At Your Toes
The 2014 FJ Cruiser came equipped with a 4.0-litre DOHC V6 engine with 260 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque. While not the most frugal engine Toyota has ever come up with, it does incorporate a smart Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection system. The result is that the fuel that does get gurgled up by the V6 ends up generating remarkable power. How so? Paired with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), the FJ Cruiser offers tons of virtually instant power at even the slightest push of the throttle.
Surreal Off-Roading Capabilities
Particularly impressive on the FJ Cruiser was the 4-Wheel Crawl Control system, designed for descending/ascending extremely steep terrain. Essentially, the system would independently operate the accelerator, brakes and throttle control to maintain an ultra slow target speed during steep climbs or descends, thereby allowing the driver to focus solely on steering the vehicle. Add an impressive 9.6 inches of ground clearance to that and it becomes clear why the 2014 FJ Cruiser is still among the most usable SUVs today.
Simple, Yet Functional Design
On the inside, the driver can reach all of the controls very easily thanks to the spacious, yet adequately ergonomic interior. The white-rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel allows for easy viewing of the black and white-faced gauges, while the audio system and HVAC controls are placed below the wide centre stack. Though not particularly modern, such a layout definitely puts an emphasis on usability rather than appearance – another thing that is of great value for the 2014 FJ Cruisers intended market. The seats offer an elevated seating position, with the front bucket seats offering side bolsters and wide seat cushions. Rubber floor mats are standard, of course, with ample storage spaces throughout the interior. In other words, the 2014 FJ Cruiser was designed in a way that allows it to rival even much younger and more contemporary off-road vehicles of today. Investing in one promises to provide daily usability and reliability at the price of a used vehicle indeed.
More About the Canadian Black Book Awards
Toyota is synonymous with many things in the automotive world, first and foremost the ample reliability and usability it rolls off with straight from the production line. These two qualities can be said to be the main reason for the recognition that the FJ Cruiser has been granted by the automotive experts at CBB. The CBB Awards actually track vehicle values over the course of a four-year period while observing various data points like sales transactions from a number of sources. These valued prizes are bestowed only upon vehicles that are deemed to hold the highest percentage of their original MSRP – one of which is the reliable FJ Cruiser.
