Through the emergence of the Infiniti VC-Turbo, engines are no longer limited by a fixed compression ratio. VC stands for variable combustion, a technology capable of an engine to transform itself and seamlessly raise or lower the height the pistons reach. This results in the displacement of the engine changes, and the compression ratio ability to vary anywhere between 8.1 – for high performance, and 14.1 – for high efficiency. When a change in compression ratio is required, the Harmonic Drive turns and moves the actuator arm which in turn rotates the control shaft. While the control shaft rotates, it acts upon the lower-link that changes the angle of the multi-link. The multi-link is what adjusts the height the piston can reach within the cylinder, and then alters the compression ratio accordingly. For many years, carmakers have aimed to find a practical means of varying an engine’s compression ratio. Varying the compression ratio in a running engine is intimidating because of the ideal ratio changes with speed and load. The rise in current global mileage standards is encouraging every maker to try to find additional means of curbing fuel consumption.
The launch of the Infiniti VC-Turbo engine
At the Paris Auto show, Infiniti presented a significant development of a variable-compression-Turbocharged engine. This boosted 2.0 Litre four-cylinder engine is the result of two decades of research and three-hundred patents and is ready to power the next Infiniti QX50 crossover, which is due in early 2018. Infiniti’s first venture of a car in the premium sedan category is with the futuristic shape of the Q80, a concept that hints at the company’s smart powertrain technology and design language.
