What the Future Holds for the Dodge Grand Caravan

October 09 2019

The Dodge Grand Caravan has gone without a significant update for almost a decade now, and as such, even its top trims are missing basic features offered by other minivans in this segment. To be frank, the Grand Dodge Caravan is missing much of the high-tech equipment we expect from minivans these days. Even though it’s quite cheaper and more spacious than other vans of its class, buyers are willing to spend more to get better models in this segment.

Despite its high sales records, the automaker is keen on doing away with the old van and replacing it with a new one. Even so, the new van is expected to stick to the Pacifica architecture so that it looks more like a redesigned van. From the look of things, we may have a new minivan with better features and improved performance to catch up with the competition.

The Current Model of The Dodge Grand Caravan

While there are no changes for the new Caravan, it’s still a favorite choice for budget-minded buyers looking for a spacious family vehicle. The minivan seats a maximum of seven and has a roomier cabin with ample cargo space. There isn’t much to admire about its cabin apart from the Stow ‘n Go seats that easily collapse into the floor to increase cargo space. However, this isn’t a unique feature as other more modern vans like the Chrysler Pacifica offer the same.

The Dodge Grand Caravan comes in three trim levels: SE, SE Plus and SXT. All trims come standard with a 3.6-litre V6 powertrain paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, which delivers adequate power for a daily drive. At the base trim levels, it's lowly priced, coming with basic functional features. On the higher trims, however, the Dodge Grand Caravan offers a few extra features such as leather upholstery for more comfort. Space isn’t compromised across the trims. Even at base trim levels, there’s a lot of space in the cabin and seats seven passengers comfortably.

The main reason why you should buy this minivan is its affordability. However, if your budget is flexible, it would be much better to go for other minivans like the Honda Odyssey that’s higher in value. Better still, if you want to stick to your budget, you can get used minivans of either Honda Odyssey or the Chrysler Pacifica. This is because they’re cheaper and still perform better than a new Caravan minivan.

What’s The Future of the Dodge Grand Caravan?

According to the automaker, the Dodge Grand Caravan will be replaced with something smaller and that’s based on Pacifica’s architecture. They aim at making it less of a minivan and more of a crossover since most families are now turning to crossover-style vehicles. While the Pacifica is more pleasantly designed than the Caravan, its price is more or less the same as the Caravan’s, and, therefore, it’ll perfectly take over the minivan’s position in the market. Moreover, the automaker feels that a smaller alternative of the Pacifica would allow it to continue with its designing of an inexpensive minivan, but this time bring a more stylish vehicle than the boxy Caravan.

Even as the Dodge Grand Caravan exits the market, it’s still a favourite family car to most buyers. For those who value space and affordability more than comfort, the minivan is a perfect choice.
