CBB Best Residual Value Awards Redefine Industry Benchmarks
February 13, 2025 (Markham, ON) – Canadian Black Book, the leading provider of Canada’s used vehicle valuation data and residual value forecast solutions, today announced its 2025 Best Residual Value Awards. These awards forecast a vehicle’s value as a percentage of its original MSRP after 4 years.
In its fourth year, the Residual Value Awards have recognized 16 vehicles and 5 brands across 21 categories. These awards project the residual values anticipated in 2029. This year, Canadian Black Book announced the award winners at the 2025 Canadian International Show in Toronto at media day on February 13.
With the expansion of categories to encompass crossovers in various segments, a noticeable shift in consumer preference towards SUVs continues to emerge. Residual values have shown a consistent trend of leveling off over the last two years as new car supply returns to form. For award winners in 2023MY, the average was 67.61%. This saw a slight decrease in 2024MY, with an average of 66.28%. Currently, the average for 2025MY has diminished further to 60.93%.
The gap between car residual values and those of the light truck segments has widened significantly. Currently, a 5.08% difference separates the two. Despite this, SUVs, crossovers and trucks have also experienced a sharp decline in their residual values, dropping from 67.50% in 2024 to 63.53%. Meanwhile, the average residual value for cars fell from 64.08% in 2024MY to 58.45% in the 2025MY.
The top performers in terms of residual value margins are led by the Porsche 718 Boxster (70.40%), followed by the Toyota Land Cruiser (69.60%) and the Toyota Tundra (68.00%). The Porsche 718 Boxster has surpassed the Chevrolet Corvette, taking the lead in residual value for two consecutive years. Meanwhile, this marks the second consecutive year for the Toyota Tundra to achieve one of the highest residual values.
Electric crossovers (58.35%) have yet to achieve the performance level of their gasoline-powered equivalents (65.05%). However, Electric Passenger Cars (55.75%) consistently outshine their internal combustion alternatives (54.20%).
“Despite these advancements, electric vehicles are witnessing a decline in consumer interest when compared to past years, failing to garner substantial attention,” said Yolanda Biswah, President, Canadian Black Book..
In the Overall Brand Awards, Toyota secures the ‘Overall Brand Award: Car’ for the fourth consecutive year and the ‘Overall Brand Award: SUV/Truck’ for the third year in a row. Porsche maintains its strong presence in the luxury market but relinquishes the brand award for Zero-Emissions Vehicle to GMC. Meanwhile, Genesis earns its victory by claiming the ‘Most Improved’ brand award.
Toyota dominates the residual value awards, securing victories in seven separate categories, while Porsche wins in four. Consistent performers from last year include the Nissan Leaf, which continues to excel in the ‘EV Car Below $55,000’ category, the Porsche Taycan in ‘EV Car Above $55,000,’ and the KIA EV9 in ‘EV SUV/Truck Below $60,000.’ All of these vehicles have maintained their winning streaks for two consecutive years.
