“With another minor movement in the Retention Index, September marks the third consecutive month of relative stability. With a negative swing of only 0.4% since June, the last 90 days highlight the stability of the Canadian used-vehicle market, especially compared with the U.S., where values have declined by more than 5% over the same period. Contributing factors to the stability of our market include noteworthy demand for both new and used vehicles. The new-vehicle market has seen incentives increase, while electrified vehicles have received a surge of interest. At the same time, affordability continues to weigh on most buyers, who are seeking value in the used-vehicle market. This is reflected in the 14-day rolling average used-vehicle retail price, which increased by nearly 4%, or $1,350, during this period,” says Daniel Ross, Director of Strategic Market Insights at Canadian Black Book.

The Canadian Black Book Used Vehicle Retention Index is calculated using CBB’s published Wholesale Average value on two to six-year-old used vehicles, as a percent of original typically equipped MSRP. It is weighted based on registration volume and adjusted for seasonality, vehicle age, mileage, and condition. The Index offers an accurate, representative, and unbiased view of the strength of today’s used vehicle market values.  The Index dates to January 2005, when Canadian Black Book published a benchmark index value of 100.0 for the market.
