“Depreciation is beginning to settle as the midpoint of 2026 marks a turning point for the automotive market. Wholesale values are returning to more traditional weekly rates of decline as the economic landscape and its effect on consumer sentiment begin to stabilize. We are not necessarily seeing a positive outlook, but rather one that signals less volatility than in previous months.

“Although uncertainty surrounding CUSMA remains, the anticipated opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge trade corridor and relative stability in certain macroeconomic factors, including interest rates and unemployment, are helping provide the market with greater clarity. When conditions become more stable, depreciation tends to be more uniform, as evidenced by the similar week-over-week changes in average passenger-car and light-truck values.

“With the new-vehicle market slowing and incentive levels increasing to help offset that pace, the overall automotive market is the most normal it has been in months. We’ll take that as a positive,” says Daniel Ross, Director of Strategic Market Insights at Canadian Black Book.

The Canadian Black Book Used Vehicle Retention Index is calculated using CBB’s published Wholesale Average value on two to six-year-old used vehicles, as a percent of original typically equipped MSRP. It is weighted based on registration volume and adjusted for seasonality, vehicle age, mileage, and condition. The Index offers an accurate, representative, and unbiased view of the strength of today’s used vehicle market values.  The Index dates to January 2005, where the Canadian Black Book published a benchmark index value of 100.0 for the market.
